This summer we started a compost pile in a corner of our backyard. I'm amazed at how many less trash bags we fill because of it! Emma is in charge of taking the food out and dumping it on the pile. Then Clay turns the soil with a pitchfork or shovel. It makes me think they're a little like "farmkids" living in the city.

Hey Adrienne. Do critters mess w/ it? I would love to do this, but have wondered if I need to buy one of the fancy compost containers.
Not too much of a problem with critters. Whenever you put new food scraps on the pile, be sure to cover it with fresh dirt or with already decomposed materials. This helps to keep critters away and keeps all the flies from congregating there.
